Soviet film historian John Leman Riley presents a short survey of Soviet Fantasy and Sci-fi cinema from the pre-Revolutionary era through the dissolution of the Soviet Union, discussing the adaptation of Russian literature and folk tales into vibrant works of screen fantasy and horror, the impact of new technologies and the Space Race on Russian science fiction, and the absurdist, dystopian visions of the 1970s and 80s.
